Jamshedpur is the hometown of 1st private iron & steel company in India. It is also known as Steel City or Tatanagar as per the name of its founder Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata. The city is enriched with iron ore, manganese, coal, lime and bauxite and that is the reason that it has snapped up different industries from truck manufacturing to tinplate and cement production.
The city houses some of the biggest companies of India with a majority of them being Tata Group of Companies which is not only the largest but also the oldest plant of iron and steel production. Tata Steel (the erstwhile Tata Iron and Steel Company or TISCO) has laid out elaborate plans to boost their production from seven million tones per annum to 10 million tones per annum. It can then metamorphose into a world beater. The steel plant encompasses around one fourth of the total land of Jamshepdur having two interior manmade lakes.

Tata Motors with TELCON, initially known as The Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company, is a major factory in the city and encompasses 822 acres that rolls out 450 vehicles each day. The Jamshedpur-headquartered firm is manufacturing, wheel loaders, backhoe loaders, excavators and different other construction equipmenst which are utilized in the infrastructure projects. It is a competitor of Escorts construction Equipment Ltd, Caterpillar India Pvt Ltd, L&T Komatsu and JCB India Ltd providing the leading market of excavators in the country.
Lafarge cement, earlier known as Tata Cement , suffices the purpose of electricity of Jamshedpur to a large extent through its coal fired confined Power Station. It can be noticed from the railway lines while entering Jamshedpur by rail.
Other major industries found in the city include Tata Cummins, that manifests diesel engines for vehicles. It is a joint venture of Tata Motors and Cummins India ltd. Tata Tinplate, that is into Tinplate manufacturing, TRF Ltd which manufactures the machines used to handle and process bulk material. Tata Ryersons,Agrico(a subsidiary of Tata Steel) and Tata Yodogawa Ltd that produces dies and rolls for the rolling mills.
Praxair & Brin’s Oxygen Company was established in 1886 by Leon Brin and Arthur. It is a British based Company which is now a part of The Linde Group. BOC are producers of nitrogen, liquefied oxygen and other gases, having plants adjoining to the steel mill. ‘Adityapur Industrial Estate’ is also a preferred destination for various companies like Usha Martin, ABB,TCS etc.
